Difficult conditions meant below-par Hatters had to show their battling qualities to claim at point against Cambridge United on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

Town failed to make the most of the wind at their backs in the first half as the U’s led 1-0 at half time through Tom Shaw’s low drive, but Luton twice fought back from a goal down to claim a point through Jon Shaw’s header and Solomon Taiwo’s penalty.

On the conditions, Shaw said: “It is a bit difficult, it’s a wide open ground and it’s always a bit similar to this most of the time. In the first half, obviously, you’ve got an extra bit of power and in the second half you’ve got to double up. It was a bit awkward but they played really well with the wind against and we had to get to grips with it.”

But Town still felt they could claim victory despite trailing at the break, as Shaw continued: “We went in and felt we were quite solid at the back regardless of the goal. We just felt that going forward we were giving it away a little bit too much and we were getting a little bit dominated in the middle. We had a word and the lads came out, regrouped and had a good go at it. We were only 1-0 down so the game’s still there to be won.”

And Shaw felt Town were able to leave the Abbey Stadium with their ‘heads held high’, as he added: “We came here to win and although they started the better in the first half we got ourselves back into it, we battled hard and although I scored a goal I was also at fault for their second one.

“If I don’t let him score that header we were on top at the time, we got ourselves back in it and probably deserved to go on and win it. We showed that we battled without playing too well.

“You could come here and get a point and we can go out there and hold our heads high.”
