Shaw and Taiwo in contention for Wrexham trip

Hatters boss John Still has confirmed duo Jon Shaw and Solomon Taiwo will travel with the first team for their Blue Square Bet Premier clash at table-toppers Wrexham on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

Shaw has missed the last six games due to injury, but is back in training now as Still said: “Jon is fit for the squad on Saturday.

“I’m going to catch up with him regardless in some sort of game. Jon’s a player I know anyway and a player I like, so I’m looking forward to seeing him play.”

The former Gateshead forward has often been deployed in a deeper role this season, but Still hinted he would be used in his more favoured position of leading the attack.

He continued: “I think the wide people have provided good service in the games I’ve seen, so I’m hoping that will continue.

“It’s an area I want to make stronger as well, competition wise. I do want to make the competition stronger, as I do in all areas, but I love people to cross the ball.”

On Taiwo, who missed the chance to get some much-needed match action as Wednesday’s development game against Peterborough was called off, Still said: “I would have liked him to play Wednesday before making my mind up but he will be travelling on Saturday.

“I would have liked him to have a game though so I’m not 100 per cent sure.

“We were really unlucky with the development game as we had another once cancelled too. I do need to look at the non first team playing players and the young ones in a competitive environment.

Town will still be missing a number of first team players through injury as Still said: “(Scott) Rendell will be back available, but (Alex) Lawless, no, from the other night.

“(Stuart) Fleetwood no, (Janos) Kovacs no, (Scott) Neilson no, other than that, everyone’s okay.”

The Welsh side go into the game level on points with second place Mansfield, but Still admitted he won’t have the chance to properly scout teams until next season, adding: “I will be watching a DVD, but I haven’t seen Wrexham.

“At the moment, I’m leaning very heavily on people here. By the time next season comes I’ll know all the teams.

“I know most of the their (Wrexham) players, but I’ve not really seen too much on them.”
