Rooney signs for the Hatters

Luton Town have announced the signing of Maidstone winger Luke Rooney until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old started his career with Gillingham where he rose through the youth ranks to turn professional, making 57 appearances for the Gills, scoring six goals, before moving to Swindon in January 2012 for an undisclosed fee,

Rooney was part of a Robins squad containing Jonathan Smith and Paul Benson that lifted the League Two title.

Last season, he made 18 appearances in League One, while having loan spells at Burton and Rotherham, while this term he joined Crawley Town, playing five times.

On his release from the County Ground, he moved Ryman Premier League side Maidstone United, impressing for the Stones, before Hatters swooped.

Town manager John Still told the club’s official website: “Luke has got the ability to come up with that little bit of magic in games, and that something different is always good to have in a player.

“He’s been doing very well for Maidstone. We’ve watched him a few times and been very impressed. He’s a great character and he’ll prove important to us in the final 10 games of the season.”

Maidstone boss Jay Saunders told the club’s website: “Luke’s a quality player and I knew it wouldn’t be too long before some clubs came in for him. He’s been superb for us and we wish him every success in the future.”

Rooney is available to play for Town against Chester this weekend.
