Rooney pleased to make Hatters debut

The 23-year-old had only signed from Ryman Premier League side Maidstone United on Friday, but was named on the substitutes bench for the Skrill Premier tie.

Replacing Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu with eight minutes left and Town leading thanks to Matt Robinson’s goal, Rooney said: “Sometimes coming on at 1-0 as an attack-minded player is a little bit of a difficult one because you want to be able to go out there and express yourself.

“But I had to be a bit more disciplined, try and keep the ball and I think I did that.

“I slipped one down the side for Andre (Gray) and was involved in the move for the last goal, so I was pleased with the touches I got.

“When you come on for that short period you’ve got to be ever so in detail with what you do, you can’t make too many mistakes.”

Town had struggled to get going during the first half, with the side producing a nervy display, but Rooney felt his new side were always the likelier to go on and win.

He continued: “It was a frustrating game, Chester came here, had a gameplan, they had a couple of nice little players, especially the left winger.

“There was only one team who was going to go on and win the game though, it was just a case of getting the first goal and once we did that, I think the players did very well.

“We almost steamrollered them at the end and have heard they’ve done that to lot of teams and can imagine they do that, because of the way John (Still) gets them playing. There’s a very good team spirit, which I was impressed by.”

The deadlock was broken when fellow sub Robinson’s cross deceived keeper Aaron Chapman and flew into the net.

Rooney said: “I was warming up right by him. It was a brilliant cross that went into the top corner, but if I was him, I’d be telling all my friends that I got a 35 yarder, that’s all that matters!”

Town now head to Grimsby this evening and Rooney is looking to have a greater impact on the match at Blundell Park.

He added: “The boys were on a great run before they had a little mishap last Monday on the telly.

“But they’ve done fantastic and hopefully I can add to that.

“I want to play, I’m sure I’ll have to patient because the boys have done so well, but hopefully I’ll get a chance and if I do get more time on the pitch, I’m sure I can show what I can do.”
