Robinson ready to become Still’s latest gem

Aspiring teenager Matt Robinson is hoping to join the illustrious ranks of rough diamonds shaped by experienced Town boss John Still, writes Mark Wood.

In addition to defying the survival odds with Dagenham & Redbridge, Still made a name for himself by developing talented youngsters and selling them on.

Robinson admitted he was unaware of Still’s reputation until being taken aside by his new boss towards the end of last season.

Fresh from signing a one-year extension to his contract, the 19-year-old said: “At the time all I knew about the gaffer was that he had done well at Dagenham & Redbridge, I didn’t know he had taken young players and taken them to higher leagues.

“It was quite a memorable meeting and a big turning point in the season for me.

“He told me about all the players he had taken and I looked at it after on my own.

“Of the recognisable names Craig Mackail-Smith going from non-league and playing for Scotland in international football (is the biggest). There were quite a few examples.

“For him to take me under his wing and to help me with my career at Luton Town and make me better was overwhelming as well.”
