The 20-year-old shone in the heart of Hatters midfield as they romped to a 6-0 victory over Kidderminster Harriers.

First team coach Hakan Hayrettin praised the youngster, saying: “I was pleased for Matt Robinson. I said to him before the game what I tell Smudger, ‘you’re the heart of the team, and the heart pumps the blood around the team’.

“He deserves it, he’s a good kid, works hard. If you’re good enough you’re old enough.”

Robinson, standing in for leg break victim Smith, was glad to have been able to do his team-mate proud and admitted it was always in the back of his mind.

He said: “I’m over the moon with the performance that I put in.

“I’m going to try and prove that every game and just see how it goes game by game.”

The former Leicester City youngster played an important role in Luton’s victory and it was his fine effort from the edge of the area that led to Luke Guttridge’s first half opener.

He added: “I have to say I was a little disappointed (it didn’t go in), but when somebody follows it in, it’s not about who scores it’s about the team getting a goal and being able to push on from there.”
