Right result for ‘Basher’ despite split loyalties

Luton legend Kirk ‘Basher’ Stephens admitted having divided loyalties while watching his two former clubs do battle on Saturday – but he got the result he wanted in the end as Town triumphed 2-0 over Nuneaton at Kenilworth Road, writes Mark Wood.

Stephens, now 57, joined the Hatters from Boro in 1978 and went on to have a glittering career for Town, playing 248 games and netting twice, including a last-minute derby day winner against Watford in the 1-0 1979 Boxing Day victory.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Nuneaton Town are playing at places like Luton Town Football Club.
