Richards facing lengthy spell on sidelines

Hatters defender Garry Richards is not expected to return until the New Year after undergoing an operation on his injured ankle, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 26-year-old summer signing from Gillingham had been earmarked by manager Paul Buckle to fill one of the central defensive slots this season.

After recovering from a broken leg that ended his Gills career, he made one appearance for Town at St Albans in pre-season, before turning his ankle on the tour of Portugal.

The short-term future doesn’t look that much brighter for midfielder James Dance, who hasn’t featured for Town since the 1-0 home win over Stockport in January.
