Richards expected to feature for Hatters at St Albans

DEFENDER Garry Richards is expected to make his first appearance of pre-season when Hatters travel to Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division side St Albans this evening, writes Mike Simmonds.

The former Gillingham centre-half was listed on the team sheet as starting the 7-1 hammering of AFC Dunstable on Saturday, but his place went to Dean Beckwith instead.

Richards turned his ankle during the club’s trip to Portugal and assistant boss Alan Neilson said: “He missed a week’s training, but came here (Creasey Park) and did a little bit before the game.

“He came through it absolutely superb and the gaffer thought there was no point risking him.

“We’ve got other games next week, and a game on Monday night. It’s only pre-season and Garry will play on Monday night, so it was just a little precaution.”

Striker Jon Shaw was also absent, restricted to a watching role from the dug out, but Neilson thinks Town fans will get their first glimpse of the prolific front man soon.

He continued: “Jon Shaw has trained, he hasn’t missed any training sessions. We all know what he can do, Jon will be fully fit soon.”

Defender Alex Lacey will be out for a while though after he was seen with his arm in a sling at AFC Dunstable, while Mark Tyler also missed out too.

Neilson added: “Alex picked up an injury in training on his shoulder, so he’ll be out for a few weeks, hopefully it won’t be too long and he will be back in the squad soon.”

While Town were putting seven past AFC Dunstable on Saturday, St Albans were shipping 10 goals to League Two Barnet, as they went down 10-2.
