Rendell wants Hatters to show their battling side at Macclesfield

Striker Scott Rendell has urged his side to show their battling qualities at play-off rivals Macclesfield Town tonight, writes Mike Simmonds.

The forward, who returned to the starting line-up against Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday, said: “It’s another tough game, they got relegated last year, they’re no mugs and are doing okay this year.

“I’ve been there a couple of times on Tuesday nights and it’s a horrible place to go, at the best of times, let alone on a windy, rainy, cold Tuesday night. So the boys need to buckle down, grit down and grind something out.”

Town’s away form has been nothing short of disastrous recently, as they have picked up just two points from a possible 18, in stark contrast to their early season travels.

Rendell continued: “It’s disappointing as a player to be involved in a losing team. Our away form at the start was very, very good.

“We need to have a look back to what we did and how we did do those things away from home and hopefully turn it around.”

Town have a huge gap to make up on leaders Grimsby, who are 14 points clear, while the final play-off spot is now nine points away from Luton.

Rendell isn’t giving up the fight though as he added: “Fourteen points is a big gap, but we’ve got two games in hand. We know we haven’t taken advantage of that, but we can turn the form around and be eight points behind and still got them (top teams) to play.

“We had a poor run in January, but if we win six, seven in the league, our season is back on.

“Nothings been written off yet, it’s going to be difficult to catch them as they’ve been playing very well and grinding out results. But we can only concentrate on what we need to do and that’s win every game possible to get back up there.”
