Rendell wants to be an FA Cup match-winner for Town once more

Rendell’s late winner set up the tie at Kenilworth Road and left the former Peterborough and Torquay forward gaining national recognition.

Manager Paul Buckle has hinted he may recall the forward after his feat against Norwich, but Rendell, who won the FA Cup player of round after that success, will prepare as if playing regardless.

He said: “It was great to score the winner at Norwich and hopefully I can recreate that feeling on Saturday.

“It’s up to him (Buckle). He’ll let us know. I need to prepare right as does every other player to be called upon on Saturday.

“We definitely think we can get a result, otherwise there’s no point in playing. It’s not going to be easy, but I see no reason why we can’t go out there and win all over again.”

Town’s strikers all have similar records this season with Andre Gray, Rendell and Stuart Fleetwood into double figures, and Jon Shaw just behind on nine.

Rendell continued: “The gaffer said when we came in over the summer, not being disrespectful, but we’re probably four of the best strikers in the league.

“We knew only two maybe three could play at a time and you’ve got to take the chance. If you don’t score, you’ve got to be creative in that game, or make an impression and hold down your place in the team.

“I’m sure the gaffer wouldn’t drop you if you were playing well. If you were scoring goals, no way the manager would leave you out, it doesn’t happen in football.

“As a striking unit, I think we’re very close. We all wish each other the very best of luck when we go out whoever’s starting and I think that runs through the team.”

On how his side will approach a game where for once they will be huge underdogs, Rendell said: “It’s a free game for us. We’ve got no expectations, no-one tipped us to win again, maybe our luck’s running out, but we’ve got a gameplan to stick to and I can’t see why we can’t get another win or a positive result.

“It’s a great feeling to play in the big games, play against better players from higher divisions and playing as a team to get the results.”

Hatters have struggled in the league since their history-making triumph at Carrow Road, but although Rendell feels they need to put that to one side on Saturday, he admitted being the biggest club in the Conference is proving tough.

He added: “As the gaffer said, what’s done in the past is in the past.

“We can’t do anything about that, only learn from it as we can’t change history, we just need to look forward.

“We’ll enjoy the game, hopefully we’ll get another result in the cup and then when it comes back to the league, turn that around and start moving back up league table where we belong.

“Every club in this league looks at Luton and thinks that we are the team they want to beat home and away.

“You see the way people celebrate beating Luton and rightly so. We’re a massive club for this league, we shouldn’t be in it.

“That’s why our main aim is to get up the ladder and back into League Two.”
