Rendell at ease with formation changes

Town continually switched formations to keep Southport off their guard at the weekend according to adaptable striker Scott Rendell, writes Mark Wood.

He said: “We flitted in and out of formations not to make it easy for our opponents.

“In that I have different kinds of roles. I’m happy to play any role I’m given or what I’m told by the gaffer and hopefully I can do my best.”

He was preferred in a more central role to Jon Shaw in the 3-1 win, who had to make do with a place on the bench.

But there wasn’t anything sinister to the decision, as Rendell said: “Nothing to read into, it was just the gaffer’s decision to start with the XI he started with. I was lucky enough to be in that.

“I know full well it’s nothing to do with Shawy, he’s not been dropped.

“Fleets (Stuart Fleetwood) was not in the starting XI for Tuesday and he came on and scored so everyone knows it’s a squad thing.

“You never get dropped unless you’re injured or you’re not playing anywhere near your best. Everyone knows that you will go in and out of the team throughout the season and I think everybody’s bought into that.”
