Proud Hill always felt Cards could deal with Hatters

Woking boss Garry Hill was left bursting with pride after witnessing his side end Luton’s 27 game unbeaten league run at Kenilworth Road last night, writes Mike Simmonds.

A late goal from substitute Giuseppe Sole saw the Cards deservedly hand Hatters their first defeat in six months as Hill said: “I’m very proud, proud for the players, the supporters and everybody connected to Woking Football club.

“We were waiting to be on a live game for a long time. When it came out we were going to Luton away, who were 14 points clear, 27 games unbeaten, I think it looked the sort of game where people would be thinking, how many is it going to be?

“Because Hereford have had to come here and conceded seven, Kidderminster conceded six, Wrexham conceded five, Alfreton conceded three, and they’ve only conceded 11 goals at home this season.

“I don’t think anyone in this ground or anyone who witnessed the game watching it live on TV could take anything from a fine Woking team performance and a great performance for the football club.

“To come to Luton who have scored 50 odd goals and only conceded 11, and they haven’t been able to score here.

“We’ve come here and won 1-0, that is one of the best results that Woking have had for many a year.

“There’s no doubt about that. It’s a team performance which I’m sure a lot of supporters and the families of those players will savour.”

Although the result came as a huge shock to the majority of the 6,683 at Kenilworth Road, Hill had felt his side were always capable of winning.

The Cards showed a refreshing positivity compared to other visiting sides as he continued: “We were very, very confident. Not in a way to be silly, but in a way where we were the first team to go to Halifax up at the Shay this year and win.

“We were the first team to win at Gateshead in six months, we went to Barnet the other week who were playing very well and won 3-1.

“We came here with a great deal of belief and felt we were on the front foot from the off, dominated for long periods in the first half.

“Josh Payne was very unlucky when he cannoned one off the bar, Scott Rendell’s had one disallowed and we were certainly looking the team who looked at the top of the league and Luton were in our position.

“We were governing it and we didn’t have any reward really, apart from the boost of the way we played in the first 45 minutes and the brand of football we played.

“I thought we probably surprised a lot of people here, but not ourselves. What you hope is you turn round and that second half you continue.

“Luton are going to have a go and going to improve. They’ve got a big following behind them, they had their spells, had their moments. We were a little bit lucky, but they were lucky in the first half.

“We kept going and deservedly got the goal.”

Town were denied two penalties in the second period when Andre Gray was felled in the box and then Paul Benson’s shot appeared to strike an arm.

On the decisions, Hill added: “I’m not going to say anything. Some you win, some you lose, so I’m not going to get involved.”
