PREVIEW: Wrexham v Luton Town

Experience is very much the key for Wrexham as they look to make their way back into the Football League at the fifth time of asking, writes Mike Simmonds.

Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Lincoln saw both Red Dragons goals come from Brett Ormerod and Dele Adebola, aged 36 and 37 respectively with 250 goals to the names in the Football League.

Midfielder Glen Little at 37 too came off the bench in the second half as boss Andy Morrell told local media: “They are key and the experience of being in it and having done it before is massive.

“If you can pass that on to the other lads in the team then it is great.

“All the elder statesmen in the team; we will just have to look after them and get them backout on the pitch for the next game.”

Recent years have seen Wrexham pipped in the play-offs by Luton twice, with last season even more galling as they finished on 98 points, some 17 ahead of Town.

This year they have been leading the way, although found themselves knocked off the top only last night as Mansfield won 2-1 at Forest Green Rovers.

With a superior goal difference, any kind of win will see the Red Dragons back on top and they are in good form at home.

Wrexham haven’t been beaten in front of their own fans since losing to Hereford 2-1 on November 10, some eight games ago.

A recent draw with Alfreton wasn’t ideal, but they rectified that by hammering Ebbsfleet 4-1.

Overall, the Red Dragons’ home record contains too many draws for their liking, with six out of the 17 games ending all square, while the other 11 have seen the hosts win nine and draw two.

It’s not just the league that Wrexham have been chasing success in this season too as they will head to Wembley to face Grimsby Town in the FA Trophy Final next Sunday as well.

Team news: Jay Harris might return to the starting line-up following his four-match suspension,

Martin Riley could also be considered for selection tomorrow after making his comeback in the reserves’ 2-1 win at Tranmere on Wednesday. Defenders Neil Ashton and Dave Artell both picked up knocks in the 2-1 win over Lincoln on Tuesday and face Saturday morning fitness tests.

Keeper Joslain Mayebi is still out with a long-term injury too.

In charge: Andy Morrell: Player manager who took the hot seat at Wrexham on a caretaker basis in September 2011 after Dean Saunders moved to Doncaster Rovers and was then appointed on a permanent basis in October of that year.

The 38-year-old, who signed a two-year deal in April 2012, began life with Wrexham, scoring 34 league goals in 45 games before he was snapped up by Coventry City.

Never really made the impact he wanted at Highfield Road and had spells at Blackpool, Bury until he returned to Wrexham in June 2010.

View from the opposition: Boss Andy Morrell: “You know what you get from Luton.

“They have got quality players, some who have played at a higher level, and are willing to dig in and try to win matches.

“They have beaten us twice in the play-offs, they raise their game for the big games, and they have shown that this season in the FA Cup.

“It is not going to be easy but for us it is another game where we have got to be on the front foot.”

Meanwhile, Jay Harris, available after suspension, said of his side’s matches against Luton and Mansfield this week: “These will both be two good, hard games. Luton and Mansfield are always the same, they’re tough to break down and they’re good teams who can score goals. It all depends how we play but if we play like we can we can win.”

One to watch: Dele Adebola - Vastly experienced striker who joined Wrexham on loan from Rochdale until the end of the season last month.

The move has already proved successful with Adebola netting twice in four games since joining.

A powerful and physical target man who will keep the Hatters defence on their toes throughout, the striker started the season at Spotland, scoring six league goals.

The 37-year-old began life back in 1993 where he quickly became highly sought after, earning a £1million move to Birmingham City.

Since then, he has played for Oldham, Crystal Palace, Coventry, Burnley, Bradford, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, Notts County and then Dale, making over 600 league appearances, while scoring almost 150 goals.

We’ve got form: Hatters have never really enjoyed visiting the Racecourse Ground, losing 14 of the 21 matches played.

Town have won just four in that time, with the other three draws, while Luton have scored 16 goals, but conceded 32.

Their last win came back in the play-offs the season before last when Alex Lawless, Claude Gnakpa and Ed Asafu-Adjaye were on target in a 3-0 triumph.

Last time out: Hatters were left hanging on the by the skin of their teeth on their last visit to Wrexham in the play-off semi-final second leg.

Leading 2-0 from the home tie, a George Pilkington penalty on 25 minutes seemed to have assured Town safe passage to the final.
