Practice is paying off for Hatters

Crossing practice is finally making perfect for Town, according to boss John Still, writes Mike Simmonds

Luton’s manager had labelled his side’s deliveries into the box as ‘awful’ during their 2-0 defeat at Wrexham last Friday, but witnessed a major improvement as Hatters emerged 3-0 winners over Dartford on Tuesday night.

That was down in part to a huge amount of work on the training ground, along with some bravery from the players as Still said: “What you’ve got to do is get the ball in there, our quality of ball in the box was much better than it has been.

“Is that down to lots of hard work that we’ve been doing? Probably.

“But it’s also down to players being bold enough to say, I haven’t been doing great, but I’m going to keep working at it and putting it in there.”

The return of Alex Lawless was a key component to Town’s upturn in form as on the right flank, he set up Paul Benson’s opener with a delightful assist.

Lawless continued: The gaffer says we’ve been working hard on parts of play and that’s one we’ve been working hard at.

“It’s nice to see hard work is paying off and hopefully that will continue.

“There was a few more that I wasn’t too happy with as well, so I think that it just goes to show that there are a lot of crosses.

“If we get into the positions to cross them, it’s up to us as players to get percentages high and we did which is promising.”

For striker Benson, it made a huge difference too, as he had found himself starved of service during his brief Hatters career so far.

He added: “It is frustrating, Friday I was really frustrated especially losing and not feeling as though you’ve contributed.

“But I thought the the balls into box were a lot better (against Dartford).

“It’s not an easy thing to do, getting a precise ball into the box, not easy, and I feel for the boys.

“But it’s nice when they do get them in and I just want to make sure I’m there for when they do send them in.

“They’re going to think what’s the worth of me putting them in if no-one’s going to be in there to put one in.

“Hopefully that gives them a bit of confidence to say if we do stick it in, then we’ve got someone who can be on the end of it and put it in. Hopefully Saturday we’ll get a few more.”
