Poku remains unsure of where his future will lie

COMBATIVE midfielder Godfrey Poku still doesn’t know where his future lies ahead of the end of his loan spell at Southport, which culminates Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a massively successful stay with the Sandgrounders, playing more than 20 times since joining them on loan in August as part of the deal that took creative midfielder John Paul Kissock to Kenilworth Road.

Southport have made no secret of their desire to extend his stay at Haig Avenue but, with the deal coming to an end, Poku has admitted that not even he knows what will happen after the weekend.

He said: “I still don’t know what’s going to happen.

“All I want to do is play football whether it’s at Southport or Luton Whatever happens I’m grateful to the club for giving me this opportunity.”

The Hatters signed Poku to their development squad from neighbours St Albans City in January 2009, but he has found chances at Kenilworth Road limited.

However, he has excelled at Southport and believes he has learnt a lot from the experience.

He said: “If it does get extended then I’ll be more than happy and I’ll be really excited. If it doesn’t, I’ll go back to Luton and fight for my place.

“I moved to Luton as a young player and I’ve come here and I proved to myself I can play at this level and I’m delighted.

“But you can never stop and you have to keep striving to become the best and that’s what I want to do wherever it is.”

Luton are still weighing up whether to sign Hayes & Yeading midfielder Jamie Hand permanently and Poku’s future may well depend on that deal.

Manager Gary Brabin remained tight-lipped on the youngster’s future at Friday’s press conference, saying: “I would be lying if I said we hadn’t spoken to them (Southport), but at the moment everyone’s got a really important game to focus on first.”
