Plan comes together for Lawless in Heed triumph

Attention to detail certainly paid off for midfielder Alex Lawless as he was on target twice during Town’s 4-2 triumph over Gateshead on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

With the Heed bafflingly at times trying to play their way out of defence, Lawless pounced on such hesitancy in the visitors’ back-line to get a crucial second goal on 27 minutes, doubling the lead given to Town by Paul Benson.

He said: “We came into the game well organised, tactically had our plans and credit to the lads, they did it exactly how we wanted it.

“We worked on the fact that they do like to play and maybe over play at the back.

“It was stuck well in my head that some teams you play that would be in the stand, but we knew there might be chance.

“You could close them down 20 times a season and you won’t get a goal, so it was nice to come off.”

The goal took Lawless on to four for the season, one less than he managed for the whole of last term.

He continued: “You set targets before the season to get more goals and it’s nice to see that working out a little bit.

“Personal targets that are set, they’re to help the team and that’s the main thing.

“If you’re scoring goals you’re helping the team.”

Lawless had been sniffing his first professional hat-trick too, but despite a few potshots late on that were saved by Adam Bartlett, it didn’t materialise.

He said: “It was in my mind. Personally, it’s something I haven’t done before and way the game was, I felt like there was an opportunity for that, so I tried my best.

“It didn’t work out, but we got the performance and the win and that’s the main thing.”
