Owen wants the excitement of Wembley once more

EXPERIENCING the ‘exuberance and excitement and pure joy’ of a Wembley final is on Luton chairman Nick Owen’s wishlist this season after the Hatters reached the FA Trophy semi-finals, writes Mark Wood.

Town are just two games way from a Wembley return, but they will have to overcome old rivals York over two legs.

Having twice experienced Wembley victories, in the Littlewoods Cup final in 1988 and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2009, Owen is desperate to taste it again.

He said: “It (the JPT win) was one of the greatest days of my football life. April ’88 was sensational as well and I would say that was the greatest day of my sporting life as a fan.

“The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final was very close to it because of the state we were in.

“It was an oasis of exuberance and excitement and pure joy in a tough time for the football club. We would love to go back and enjoy it even more.

“The new stadium is fabulous and has a spectacular atmosphere and I would like to think we could go twice before the end of the season and we would have a fantastic turnout from our wonderful fans.”

A route through the play-offs would offer another opportunity, but Owen didn’t want to get too far ahead of himself on either front.

He added: “We definitely cannot count our chickens in any way shape or form and York are obviously very strong challengers.

“Some would say York are favourites but I don’t see it that way because we’ve got a fantastic squad and are playing some really good stuff at times.”
