For once Hatters don’t pay the penalty for spot-kick indecision at Cambridge

Designated penalty taker Jon Shaw was again left bemused as his team-mates fought it out to take Town’s spot-kick against Cambridge United on Saturday, writes Mark Wood and Mike Simmonds.

With Scott Rendell on the bench, the 29-year-old striker had assumed he would take the penalty after keeper Nicholas Pope brought Andre Gray down on 64 minutes.

Recent signings David Martin and Solomon Taiwo were both keen to take the responsibility though and it came as somewhat of a relief to see Taiwo’s finely-taken effort bulge the right hand corner of the net.

Shaw said: “I will eventually get my hands on a ball if people stop chasing the ball down and picking it up like it’s a creme egg or a £10 note.”

Other than Rendell and departed skipper George Pilkington, Town’s players have endured a miserable record from the spot in recent seasons, although Shaw is still yet to take one.

However, he was adamant it was a penalty and felt it could have been worse for the young keeper, saying: “I was surprised he didn’t get a booking. I don’t call for people to be sent off but he’s cleaned Andre out regardless of the size of Andre’s touch. He’s come in and smashed him and it’s definitely a penalty.”

On the spot kick, successful taker Taiwo said: “I had a bit of confidence in myself and was desperate for us to get back in the game so I put myself up for it and was happy that I executed it well.

“Shooting from 12 yards out, you should be able to put it in the back of the net. If the keeper does well enough to save it that’s out of my control, but I put it in the corner.”
