Nicholls hoping Gray can fire Hatters to League Two

FORMER Town captain Kevin Nicholls has pinpointed Town striker Andre Gray as Luton’s main threat going into the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final against York City on Sunday, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 20-year-old, who signed from Hinckley United in March has scored six goals in 11 games, including a run of four in four when he joined.

Nicholls, 33, who made over 200 appearances for the Hatters in two spells and still attends some home matches at Kenilworth Road, said: “I didn’t know much about him but his performances have been second to none. He’s given the team a lift and something that just wasn’t there.

“It’s just a shame they maybe didn’t get him earlier in the season. We’re not a one-man team, but his work-rate and application is first class. The team look dangerous, they look like they’ve got momentum.

“The home leg against Wrexham was the best I’ve seen Luton play since I’ve retired. That’s not me having a dig, I just thought Wrexham couldn’t cope, they were in shock and weren’t good enough. The tie should have been over in the first half, it was a magnificent performance.”
