Neilson not drawn on whether he wants top job

Caretaker boss Alan Neilson refused to be drawn on whether he would apply for the vacant manager’s position at Kenilworth Road, writes Mike Simmonds.

Neilson took the side along with Carl Emberson and Stuart Cash for the 1-1 draw with Macclesfield last night, but when asked if he would apply, he said: “I don’t know. I’m getting older and you never know who the board are looking at and who the potential candidates are.

“All I can do is get points on the board.

“I’ve said it before, I’ll just get on with my job as caretaker with Cashy (Stuart Cash) and Embo (Carl Emberson) helping out with Dimi (Kharine).

“I’ll do the best I can for Luton Town as a coach. If that gets points for Luton Town and gets them nearer the play-offs, ‘ll be happy.”

Neilson’s own future is now up in the air too as whoever comes in could well change the backroom staff.

He said: “It is part and parcel of football. We have to put belief in the players and get the players relaxed to go out and play.”

The former Town player is expecting the trio to be in charge for the home clash with Mansfield at the weekend though as he added: “It’s more than likely. Gary Sweet spoke to us and said Saturday will probably be the same.

“You never know what happens in the future though and when they could be looking to bring in a manager.”
