Morgan-Smith’s return gives Hatters an embarrassment of attacking riches says Fleetwood

THE return of Amari Morgan-Smith to full fitness has left the Hatters with a abundance of striking riches according to top scorer Stuart Fleetwood, writes Mark Wood.

After an injury-hit season, Morgan-Smith made a cameo as a late substitute in Luton’s 2-0 victory over Wrexham at Kenilworth Road on Thursday night.

The 23-year-old has been desperate to play a part in the play-offs after missing out last term through asthma and Fleetwood was delighted for his team-mate.

He said: “It’s fantastic. We all feel great for him to come back. He’s had a tough time this season. He started off so well and there was a lot of hype about him. I know he’s been very disappointed with his injuries and he feels very upset about it.

“But he’s worked very hard, the physios have worked very hard with him. To come back at this point in the season he is just another asset for us. He got on the pitch tonight and I’m sure that will give him a lot more confidence and like I said he is a great asset for us. He’s got goals, he’s strong

and it’s just another option.”

Morgan-Smith came on as an 88th-minute sub having last figured against Mansfield back in January.

He has already attempted several aborted comebacks but, despite his injury-ravaged season, he is still Luton’s second top scorer with10 goals and headed Town’s goalscoring charts for much of the campaign.

In his absence though Fleetwood and Andre Gray have forged a formidable partnership, scoring eight goals in the last seven games since Paul Buckle took charge.

Now Luton have plenty of options with target man Craig McAllister also in the mix, with Fleetwood saying: “It’s always the way. I think the goals were spread out earlier in the season. I think there’s a lot of lads who are close to double figures. But now it seems that me and Andre are reaping the rewards from hard work and a little run in the team which is what strikers want, confidence, and I think it proved that tonight.

“The gaffer does a lot of training after the normal session with the strikers particularly. And we all know what each other’s strengths are. Whether it’s me and Craig McAllister, or Andre and Craig we all know what each other’s strengths are. At the moment it just seems to be falling for me and Andre and I think you create your own bit of luck with hard work as well and we are both doing that and reaping the rewards.”

And he admitted they now know the importance of working hard no matter how they are performing, adding: “We’ve all got it in our make-up anyway, but maybe we weren’t doing it as much under the old boss which is completely our fault.

“We’ve been told if we don’t do it we won’t be in the team so we know exactly what we’ve got to do. Even if you are having a bad game you’ve always got your work-rate and I think everyone’s run their socks of tonight and we’ve got the result.”
