Town chief John Still last week claimed that the 24-year-old ex-Luton defender had proved too expensive for the Hatters to sign.

The former Republic of Ireland U21 international was on loan at Kenilworth Road from Norwich City in 2008-09 as he helped them to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

He said: “I think John Still has got more spin than Alistair Campbell at the moment and I think it’s understandable why.

“But Michael has always said he has come to Cambridge United for footballing reasons.

“People might not like to hear it, but those footballing reasons are that he wants to be fitter than he has ever been and he wants to be improving as a player again.”
