Money believes Hatters will romp to the title

Cambridge United boss Richard Money has conceded Hatters will run away with the Skrill Premier title this season due the club’s supposed financial clout, writes Mike Simmonds.

The U’s have been Town’s main rivals this term, opening up a large gap over Luton earlier in the campaign.

But Hatters reeled them in and after Tuesday night’s results, head the table by a daunting 14 points.

Speaking to the Cambridge Evening News, Money once again credited Town’s success to what he believes is their superior playing budget, saying: “I’ve got to be careful with what I say, but, with resource, you can go and get (Jon) Shaw and (Andre) Gray, who are going to win the league for Luton by a country mile.

“They’re Championship players, of Championship level, and they’re earning a lot more than we can afford to pay.”

U’s have strengthened their own attacking options in recent weeks, bringing in Portsmouth striker Ryan Bird on loan and also former Town striker Matthew Barnes-Homer.

On the addition of Barnes-Homer, who scored 23 times in 81 games for Luton, Money continued: “Barnes-Homer has come here and I know, for a fact, that every single Luton supporter on Twitter, or any type of social media, have wound our supporters up to death.

“He (Barnes-Homer) has played three games. He’s been ill, can’t play in the Trophy and he hasn’t scored, and people have made their mind up.

Although Money feels the title race is now over, injured Town midfielder Jonathan Smith felt it wasn’t a view held within the Hatters’ camp.

He said: “No-one’s really talking about promotion at the minute, although the way the lads are going it’s going to be hard to stop us.”

That was an opinion shared by forward Mark Cullen who netted against Gillingham in a development clash on Wednesday afternoon as he added: “Definitely not, you just play every game and want to win every game and when it’s mathematically done, it’s done.

“But there’s no talk of it in the dressing. We’re just concentrating on the next game.”
