Mills backs Hatters for promotion

Gateshead manager Gary Mills believes Luton Town will finally win promotion back into the Football League this year.

Mills, who took York City up through the play-offs at the expense of Hatters two years ago, saw his in-form Tynesiders team blown away by a scintillating first half display as Town romped to a 4-2 triumph on Saturday.

He said: “We had been the better side until they scored but you can’t allow a side like Luton to score three goals in quarter of an hour and that left us with a mountain to climb.

A couple of players lost their discipline in terms of doing their jobs and you can’t afford to do that against a good side like Luton who I believe this will be their year.

“But we kept going and pulled two goals back to win the second half when we were much improved. We had a better shape but had paid the price in the first half.

“We have got to learn from our mistakes and stop giving away soft goals, but losing against a top side like Luton is not the end of the world.

“We must now make sure we have a productive festive season and go into January well placed in the table.”
