Mendy’s coming to terms with life at Kenilworth Road

The on-loan Macclesfield man’s move is set to become permanent in the January transfer window and he impressed in the 3-1 victory over Woking on Boxing Day.

He said: “It’s more different between Luton and Macclesfield, but I will be fine.

“I still need to work hard, so hopefully I will be fine.”

Mendy was unaware virtually all of Town’s title-challengers had won before kick-off, but was pleased he and Alex Lawless had been able to control the midfield on the day.

He said: “No I didn’t know. Before the game the manager said to everyone we have to play like we know we can play. Start well and do your thing.

“Everyone was on it today and everyone was hungry to win the game and we did.

“We did a big job today, won the second ball, that was OK.”

He was also encouraged by Town’s largest crowd of the season and wasn’t concerned even when the visitors pulled a goal back in the second half.

“It was very good, they are the best fans in this league so they helped a lot,” he said.

“No I didn’t worry. I just knew we were on it, so no.”

And he’s confident Luton will be able to keep picking up the points over the festive period, starting with Saturday’s visit of Ebbsfleet, adding: “We have to do the same as we did today and we will be fine.”

Boss Paul Buckle is also pleased that Town’s new signings are beginning to settle.

He said: “These players if they’ve not played in an arena like this it’s a big factor. It’s a huge fact.

“I think it’s one of the things in the past maybe that has not allowed us to get to where we want to be as a football club.

“It’s all right going and scoring goals and playing really well at another club where you only get a handful of supporters.

“With all due respect I’m not knocking that. But it’s easier to do that. It’s not so easy in here when the pressure’s on.

“Because our supporters expect, and rightly so, but the players are only human.

“So, yes today Mendy showed what he’s about, I think all the players did.

“And we want to try and get this place at home as a place where the players can feel some warmth and really, really go out and express themselves.

“And if we started like we started today, our fans, there are no better fans around, will get right behind us and push us home.

“We were all waiting to get the third goal and kick on, but that would probably be disrespectful to Woking. But I think they would well understand they were probably a touch fortunate to be in the game at that stage.”

And he had further words of praise for his midfield pairing, adding: “I must say as well I thought Lawless and Mendy did excellently in the middle. They had a lot of ground to cover.

“When you play the system that we played it’s important you have two disciplined, selfless midfielders and they were both that today.”
