The defender had won the league before, with Fleetwood two years ago, but believes the expectation at Kenilworth Road far outweighed his previous experience.

McNulty said: “I don’t think words can describe that.

“I’ve been at Fleetwood, that was a great promotion as I was with all my mates, we went there and did it and deserved to do it.

“Here there’s a lot of history and I’ve said it many a time, I didn’t realise how much it meant to people and how hard done by they were.”

Town’s win over Forest Green on Saturday meant they were 16 points ahead of Cambridge and McNulty didn’t expect there to be such a margin at the top.

The defender also praised the fans for their impact this year, turning Kenilworth Road into something of a fortress.
