Martin indebted to Tyler for saving his blushes

Impact substitute David Martin was indebted to keeper Mark Tyler for saving his blushes as he made an all-action cameo from the bench, writes Mark Wood.

The 73rd-minute sub forced a fingertip save from Tyler as he almost scored a bizarre own goal from 20 yards, before salvaging a 1-1 draw against Hereford United with his first Hatters goal.

He said: “I nearly had one at each end, luckily Tyles helped me out, but it definitely felt good to get a goal.”

“I was watching it go in all the way and I thought that’s it, it’s in, but it’s a fingertip save on to the bar and away it went and I was so happy.

Martin’s debut goal was every bit as good though, a crisp long-range strike to earn a draw when it looked like Town’s stirring second half showing would count for nothing.

He said: “There was a bit of a gap there and I just hit it across goal.

“It was goal-bound and it could have taken a touch off anyone but luckily it’s just gone straight in.”

On the performance, Martin added: “First half we were a bit slow coming out of the blocks and conceded the goal, but I think we came into it towards the end of the first half and second half we did really well and pushed on.

“We had plenty of chances, balls cleared off the line, one we don’t know whether it was in or not, but I was happy to get the goal.

“It would have been nice to have taken all three points but it’s another point on the board and we go again Tuesday.

“You look at it two ways. It’s disappointment because we should have taken all three but again it’s another game without a loss. We’ve got to make sure we keep picking up points as we go and see what happens between now and the end of the season.”
