Martin can’t wait for Hatters’ pre-season

Unlike most footballers, Luton winger David Martin can’t wait for pre-season to start on July 1, writes Mike Simmonds.

Although not looking forward to the gruelling schedule awaiting him, Martin just wants something to relieve the tedium of the close season.

He said: “I’m itching to get back to it as I’m so bored already.

“It’s why you become a footballer because you love playing the game so much.

“Everyone’s getting their head on and thinking what’s round the corner.

“It’s a horrible thought as well, and the only good thing is when the games come along, that’s why you enjoy it.

“You want to get back in the swing of things.

“Most players have their first two weeks off as a blow out and then you’re back on it.

“You don’t ever really switch off and keep yourself ticking over during the summer.

“It’s impossible to sit down and not do anything for that amount of time anyway, there’s always something to do.

“Everyone knows you’ve got to look after yourself, and there’s a good bunch of lads here.

“I don’t think anyone would take the mick and they will all get back in good shape and be ready to go again.”

Defender Scott Griffiths admitted that a pre-season schedule under boss John Still left him in the fittest shape he has been, during their time together at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Now in his sixth year as a professional, with spells at Crystal Palace, Derby and Millwall, Martin is more than ready for whatever comes his way.

He said: “The club’s I’ve been at, I’ve done some very hard pre-seasons, so I’m not expecting anything different.

“It’s always going to be hard graft, you’ve got to be mentally strong to get through it.

“As long as you don’t quit, you get through it, the lads pull each other through.

“What you need is a good team and, as long as everyone completes it, you go for it yourself.”

Martin will be joined by a new-look Town squad with boss Still signing six players including the likes of Shaun Whalley and Mark Cullen.

He has also released 10 players and placed another five on the transfer list.

With so much change at Kenilworth Road, Martin is fully aware that places will be up for grabs.

He added: “There will be lots of new faces, lots of getting to know everyone again, building a team bond.

“There’s going to be competition for places, but that’s like any club at any pre-season.

“It’s a clean slate for everyone. You’ve got to get your mind on it and if you get the nod you get the nod.

“If not, then you’ve got to fight for it.”
