Marked man Whalley will relish Hatters freedom

New boy Shaun Whalley believes not being the main man for once could well work in his favour at Kenilworth Road this term, writes Mike Simmonds.

Whalley was often seen as the dangerman for former club Southport, scoring 19 League goals in the last two seasons, with numerous assists too.

Town midfielder Alex Lawless revealed it was Whalley who they pin-pointed in pre-match meetings and the ex-Accrington forward thinks he will revel being part of an attack-minded Luton side.

Whalley said: “At Southport, I was getting targeted all the time as the main danger.

“Sometimes teams would put two and three on me, now they’re going to have that many talented players in the team, they’re not going to be able to do that.

“They’ll be wary of other people as well, so I think that will play into my hands.”

Town often fond themselves having to try and break down opponents who came to Kenilworth Road with the main aim of containment.

That doesn’t bother Whalley though, who was alsos more than impressed with what he saw when watching Town ease to a 3-1 win at the Sandgrounders on the final game of last season.
