The midfielder played 70 minutes for the Town, who included Matt Robinson, JJ O’Donnell, Scott Rendell and trialist Oliver Hughes, against a strong Posh team at the League One side’s training ground.

Luton had fallen behind in the first half through Jermaine Anderson’s strike but hit back in the second period through Lawless.

His first goal came after the Town worked the ball well down the right flank, allowing last season’s player of the year to stab home from 12 yards.

No sooner were the Hatters level they took the lead when Lawless finished well after good work from Scott Rendell in the build-up.

Posh pushed for an equaliser but the Hatters were indebted to a number of fine saves from goalkeeper Elliot Justham to keep the score 2-1.

Assistant manager Terry Harris told the club’s official website: “No matter who you are playing, winning is important. We’ve come to a League 1 team with a number of their first team players in the line-up and come away with a win.

“It’s good that we build a winning mentality into the team but the game was also a great opportunity for players to get valuable minutes under their belts.

“Alex played 70 minutes and did very, very well. A number of the young players also got a taste of the action and there was another half-an-hour for Zane Banton.”
