Lawless misses Hyde trip but Hatters not taking it easy

Hatters midfielder Alex Lawless won’t feature against Hyde in Town’s final game of the season this weekend, while striker Paul Benson remains a doubt.

Lawless is out with a hamstring injury, while Benson has an ankle problem as assistant boss Terry Harris said: “I don’t think Alex will be right for Saturday.

“The job is done to a certain extent, so it’s pointless pushing someone who isn’t 100 per cent, so he may well take a backwards step on Saturday.

“Everyone seems okay, there’s a few aches and pains, but that’s natural. We’ll see how Benno is today and tomorrow and then speak to the medical staff and see.”

Harris appeared to rule out wholesale changes to the team though, with the likes of Mark Tyler, Steve McNulty and Scott Griffiths determined to keep their record of starting every game this season.

Harris continued: “There’s a number of players that have played all the games, Tyler, Macca, Griffiths and you would want them to finish what they started back on August 9 last year.

“They’ll be involved because to play in every single game is a fantastic achievement.

“We said that to them this morning, you play 46 games and you want to get as many goals and as many points as possible, nothing changes.”

Striker Andre Gray will be desperate to play too as he is just one ahead of FC Halifax Town’s Lee Gregory in the race for the golden boot.

Harris said: “I think Andre wants to score as many as he can, he’s in contention with Lee Gregory and Halifax are at home to Kidderminster on Saturday, so there’s a chance he could bag a couple as well, it would be nice if he finished top goalscorer.”

Meanwhile, 3,000 Town fans are expected to travel and enjoy one last party atmosphere, so Harris wants to reward them by making it a worthwhile journey.

He added: “I know we’ve got a great following going up there which is absolutely fantastic.

They’re spending their hard-earned money to come and support us and we rightfully have to put on a performance for them.”
