The Welshman, who scored twice as Hatters cut the gap to just a point on leaders Cambridge United, said: “I played there a few times when I was younger, I haven’t done it so much here, but have drifted over there a few games in the last few months.

“I enjoy just as much as the other side as sometimes if you cut inside and the defender doesn’t know your dominanently right footed, it’s quite a surprise to them and you get more shots on goal on your strong side.

“I enjoyed it, I just enjoy playing though and it’s another option for us.

“It’s important throughout the season to have more than one string to your bow with formations.

“It’s a long season, we play all different types of teams, so it’s good to see us having those variations.”

Apart from scoring twice, Lawless also had a huge role in Town’s opener as it was his cross that Paul Benson arched his back to nod home.

He said: “You set the goals targets and being a midfielder, most definitely you set yourself assists targets as well.

“I know Paul thanked me for the cross, but he had a lot to do with the header I thought as well.

“It was a great finish from him, but when you see players doing that you know if you put it in, it gives you more confidence to do it.

“I played on the left and it was a left footed cross. Things like that personally, it’s a confidence boost as you can take that on and help the team again.”

On why he opted to alter Lawless’ position, boss John Still added: “I’ve been toying with that, playing him on the wrong side a little bit, because he’s very clever when he comes in from the left side on to this right foot.

“We do a little bit in training with it and I was looking at an opportunity to do it.

“I thought it was a good opportunity as they play 4-3-3, which quite suits us as well.

“Sometimes having a player on the wrong side can help your front people too as they can come off the line and serve it into them.”
