The 28-year-old, who joined Luton back in November 2010 has seen the Hatters undergo play-off misery twice during his time at Kenilworth Road, and then fail to make the top five last season.

Town now head to the Abbey Stadium clear favourites for the title as they are 15 points clear of the U’s and 26 games unbeaten in the league.

Lawless said: “It’s a position I’ve wanted to be in for a few years now, going there top of the league, clear on points.

“Hopefully we’ll prove why we’re that far in front of them. But they’re where they are for the reasons that they deserve to be.

“It’s a tough game like all of them will be, but it’s definitely a game you want to be involved in.”

On the extra importance surrounding the clash, with Hatters having the chance to move 18 points of their rivals with just 11 games left, Lawless said: “Of course it has, I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t.

“It’s nice to go into that know knowing we’ve got that unbeaten run still going and it would be even nicer to extend that against them, our next rivals in the table, so it’s something were all looking forward to.”

Despite the fact that Cambridge have seen their promotion chances falter drastically in recent weeks, Town boss John Still felt the U’s had enjoyed a good season to date.

He added: “Any other year, they could be a lot closer, but we’ve had a great run.

“I think Cambridge have had a good year, they’re second in the league and in the (FA) Trophy final.

“Has their form dropped off a little bit? It might have done, but we’ve had to have a very, very decent season to stay in front of them.

“Teams close behind them are putting them under pressure, so we have to make sure we keep doing our bit and make sure we don’t get too many close to us putting us under pressure.

“But that’s the game. I don’t know where Cambridge are going to finish, I haven’t got a clue.

“I think that probably if at the start of the season someone was to say to Cambridge, this is where youll be at this time of the year, I think they’ll have been happy with that.”
