Law rues Alfreton’s mistakes at Kenilworth Road

The Reds had come with a clear gameplan to frustrate their hosts and it worked for the opening half hour until Luke Guttridge was left unmarked to blast Hatters in front.

Two more defensive errors saw Hatters add another two goals in the second period as Law said: “Maybe if you make those three mistakes, you get away with two of them against the average team at this level.

“But they have got players who I feel are above the level. People judge you on what you spend but you can have all the money in the world, it’s how you invest it.

“John Still has got some excellent players here, but that said, if you take the mistakes out of the game, there wasn’t a great deal between the two sides.

“I’m not just the losing manager feeling sorry for themselves. I look at the programme, they’ve got 40-odd players and we’ve got 16.

“We’ve trained twice a week in eight weeks, but the higher you go, you can’t make mistakes.”

On his approach to the match which saw former Town midfielder Godfrey Poku employed to man-mark Guttridge in the early stages, Law continued: “We’ve come here with a gameplan, Godfrey Poku just did a job on Guttridge.

“We gave one up for one, what did he do? He did nothing.

“I watched him here on Tuesday night, he scored a couple of goals and he ran the show.

“He’s done nothing for 25 minutes as Godfrey’s not let him do anything.

“They’ve changed their shape, Poku let him go on another player and that player hasn’t dealt with him.

“We switched off and make one mistake and gone in 1-0 down at half time and we’re absolutely devastated.”

Town’s second arrived when on-loan Barnsley defender Andrai Jones tried to let the ball run out, but Scott Griffiths slid in to tee up Andre Gray’s 25th of the season.

The third saw keeper Jon Worsnop’s clearance rebound off Nick Fenton into the path of Jake Howells, who set up Paul Benson to score as Law added: “Coming out second half, again there’s nothing in the game and then young Andrai Jones has tried to usher the ball out.

“Players make mistakes and good players learn from them. He’s a young lad, if he’s playing U21 football, they probably give up on that one and it runs out.

“But at this level, people don’t give things up. At 2-0 we’ve made it a lot more difficult for ourselves and I still think if we can get a goal, we can get back in the game.

“The third goal sums it up as any chance we’ve had is out the window.

“I came here on Tuesday and I saw five goals go in against Wrexham, but I don’t think we struggled, we’ve created our own downfall.”
