Lacey felt Southport showed greater desire than Hatters

Disappointed young defender Alex Lacey admitted Southport had shown greater ‘desire’ than the Hatters in Town’s 1-0 defeat at Haig Avenue on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

A lacklustre first half showing from Luton saw the Sandgrounders net the decisive goal in fortuitous circumstances as skipper Jamie Milligan’s massively deflected 20-yard free-kick looped past the wrong-footed Mark Tyler.

Lacey conceded: “I think Southport came out with a lot of desire and they took the game right to us.

“It was a bit of a shock for us because we should have come out and done the right things, but we’ve kind of come out and we had a bit of a friendly match kind of feel about it.

“They’ve come out thinking it’s a league game, there’s points up for grabs and their desire showed first half.

“They’ve done well to show that bit of desire, especially first half and beaten us to it.”
