With the scores level at 1-1 from the first leg, over 8,000 were in attendance as the Heed took the lead through James Marwood.

Grimsby levelled when Craig Disley scored, but the Mariners went down do nine men as ex-Hatter Scott Neilson was sent off, plus defender Sam Hatton.

Gateshead retook the lead through Marwood once more, before O’Donnell’s strike sparked a mini pitch invasion.

After the game, O’Donnell tweeted: “What a day! Incredible game, Incredible atmosphere and an Incredible feeling to score the 3rd goal to send the Heed to Wembley.”

They will now face Cambridge United for a place in the Football League, as the U’s came from 1-0 down to beat FC Halifax Town 2-0 and win the tie 2-1 on aggregate.
