A pitch invading Hatters fan had to be escorted from the field after trying to join Town’s huddle at the end of Saturday’s 4-3 victory at Tamworth, writes Mark Wood.

The uninvited fan strayed on to The Lamb playing surface at the final whistle before having to be ushered away by the stewards.

Town chief John Still, who has started to invite supporters into the huddle after home games, said: “I didn’t ask him neither! He’s got to stay off the pitch hasn’t he!”

But he was once again delighted with the support as Town’s travelling army of 1,199 fans made up well over half of the 2,066 gate.

Still continued: “It was absolutely unbelievable. I’ve said really for a long while, I know we had a little bit of a problem, I think the support had been good, although there’s not going to be some people happy with everything.

“But the support I think now is long, hard, eager and absolutely fantastic.

“And you know what, as much as us winning the game, the supporters have played their part to win the game and the reason they’ve done that, I think they’ve recognised they’re part of our team.

“This is our team, our team is on the pitch, our team is off the pitch. Would a team be able to do it on its own? No. Would the supporters do it on their own? No. Will we all do it together? Yes.”

And he was treated to some interesting banter from the fans as he was sandwiched between both sets of supporters on one side of the pitch.

Still added: “It’s really funny because on my left they didn’t like me, and on my right they were all right with me.

“But listen, I like the banter, as long as people are not soppy abusive to anybody that’s fantastic.

“I can’t wait for the games. I love this job, doing what I do, and I am giving it everything I’ve got to make this a great successful season.”
