Howells won’t be at U21 Euros after Wales fall to Armenia defeat

Town midfielder Jake Howells made his fifth appearances for the Wales U21s as their hopes of reaching next summer’s European U21 Championship finals were extinguished with a 1-0 defeat to Armenia at Wrexham on Wednesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The hosts found themselves a goal down and a man down on just six minutes as David Stephens’ handball in the area resulted in a red card and a penalty that Hovhannes Hambardzumyan netted.

Hambardzumyan missed another spot-kick in the second half but Wales failed to fight back meaning next month’s final Group Three trip to the Czech Republic is irrelevant.

Although Howells was used in a more advanced position than he has been played for Luton this season, he was happy to represent his country and has set his sights on winning more caps.
