Howells wants Town to mirror Stevenage’s title winning run

Jake Howells wants Luton to take a leaf out of Stevenage’s book in their attempt to claw back the 14 point deficit at the top of the table, writes Mike Simmonds.

Hatters are way behind leaders Grimsby going into tonight’s trip to Macclesfield, but when Boro went up in 2009-10, with a certain Ronnie Henry as their captain, they hauled back table-toppers Oxford United.

Howells said: “I travel in with Ronnie every day. He said they were about 20 points behind at Stevenage and they caught them up.

“You never say never. We’re not going to stop working hard and are still aiming to win the league.

“It’s still in our hands we think and as long as we keep going to try and get three points, we’ve still got a chance.

“We wanted to sort out our league form and hopefully go on a run after Norwich. It hasn’t happened, but maybe after Millwall we can.

“Everyone has a dip in the season and we want to go Macclesfield on Tuesday and get three points.”

Goalkeeper Dean Brill was also not writing of Luton’s title chances either as he said: “It’s a tough league, simple as that, but there are 19 odd games to go so there’s still so many points.

“We can’t give up with 19 games left. There’s still too many points to play for it to be away from us yet.

“It’s been such an up and down season. Every week you look at the results and they’re all shockers, there’s something there every week.

“I still think we can aim for the top and if we come up short, we’ll be somewhere in and around there.”
