Howells gives Still a timely reminder

Supersub Jake Howells gave Luton’s coaching staff a timely reminder of his ability as he netted twice and set two up as Town romped to a 6-0 victory over Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

With Luton in such terrific form, Howells has had to be patient for his chance, which came after now departed on-loan West Ham United midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu was forced off with a knee injury.

He said: “It’s a shame Pelly got injured, but I got a chance and I wanted just to help the boys.

“I can’t knock not playing at the moment because the boys are doing so well and I’ve just got to help them out and keep backing them.”

All four of the former Welsh U21 international’s goals have come against Harriers this season, having netted twice from the spot in the 2-0 win at Aggborough.

He was on target with a penalty again at the weekend, but his second was a simple tap in from a couple of yards after Paul Benson had headed Andre Gray’s cross back across goal.

Howells said: “Benno has done brilliantly to knock it down for me and I can miss them, I can definitely miss them, but it hit the roof of the net and I was over the moon.”

The youngster was also a key provider, providing the ammunition for Benson to head home and then unselfishly sliding in Luke Guttridge for the sixth and goal of the game.

He added: “Benno’s so good in the air and he’s such a good player for the team as well as for everyone else.

“He’s an experienced head and helps everyone out.”
