Howells is focused on FA Cup trip to Cambridge

It will be purely professional when Jake Howells comes up against a former boss and ex-team-mate in the FA Cup on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

Town travel to the Abbey Stadium to take on Cambridge United in a fourth qualifying round tie at the weekend, and the U’s are now managed by ex-Hatters boss Richard Money under whom Howells came to the fore at Kenilworth Road.

Winger Robbie Willmott is now back in favour after Money’s appointment and Howells is looking forward to locking horns with the duo.

On Money, he said: “He’s just a manager. He helped me, he gave me a chance in the team and I respect him, but I’m going out there now under a different manager and I’m going there to get Luton a win.

“He’s with a different team now, he’s got different players, I don’t know how he’s going to play it.

“It’s up to him what he does but it’s all about us on the day and if we perform I think we’ll have a good chance.”

Meanwhile, Howells is also looking forward to seeing Willmott, saying: “He played here against us and it’s always nice to see him but once you cross over that white line it’s a game of football.

“We want to win, I want to win and I’m sure he does as well.

“I talk to him regularly, we still keep in touch, he’s still a close mate of mine. We will see what happens and obviously I wish him the best.”

Travelling to the U’s is one of the more difficult ties Town could have been handed but Howells thinks it’s a decent draw and is targeting a run in the competition.

He added: “Whoever we play against is never going to be easy. Whether it’s two leagues below, one league below.

“I think it’s probably better we play somebody that close.

“It gets us a bit of rivalry, the fans love it, and we will go there and hopefully get through to the next round.

“Everyone wants to have a good run and maybe get a big team.

“Everyone wants that but if it don’t work out it don’t work out, it happens.

“But we’ve always got the league which is the main priority.

“We’d love to win, obviously, but there’s no shame in it. We just want to go on a run and hopefully win next week.”
