Howells felt Harriers win was no surprise

Victory with a complete team performance was ‘coming’ according to Jake Howells as the Hatters triumphed 2-0 at title rivals Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

Howells said: “It was coming. We’ve been playing well but not as well as we can be and we’re starting to get there slowly.

“It’s all forming together and we know we can still play better than we did. As long as the formation and everything’s right, we work hard, we’ll be hard to beat.”

Hatters have been struggling in front of goal this season, with just three prior to their trip to Aggborough.

Howells’ bagged both penaltie though and was that he’d been able to get off the mark for the season after missing two great opportunities from open play.

He continued: “There was a couple of chances, so I was a bit annoyed.

“I rushed it a bit, but it’s going to come. With Andre he’s going to get goals, Bens (Paul Benson) has come in, he’s obviously going to get goals, we’re going to score goals as a team.

“I wanted to repay the boys. I had a very good chance first half and I know I should have done better and it was in the back of my mind the whole game.

“Then the penalty came up and I put it away luckily and we got another one and it sealed the game.”

Howells also believes that with he and Andre Gray playing on either side of the pitch, their styles in the formation complement one another.

He said: “I think the way we play and the way Andre is on the other side, he’s more of a striker than a winger, so I sit back a little bit more on the left that’s what the gaffer wanted me to do and I did a job there to stop the right-back.

“Everyone worked together and everyone helped each other out.”

Town’s longest serving player was also delighted they had been able to reward the 821 travelling Luton fans that made up almost a third of the crowd at Aggborough.

He added: “I loved it and they deserve it. They’ve come a long way and there’s a lot of them and they deserve us to work hard out there and everyone deserves the three points.”
