Hotshot Gray is buzzing as Luton claim crucial advantage

TOWN striker Andre Gray felt Wrexham were no match for his side’s pace and power during their 2-0 victory at Kenilworth Road on Thursday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Red Dragons had won both league encounters against Luton this season, but from the first whistle, Hatters tore into their opponents with relish, and their opponents couldn’t cope, particularly with the devastating pace of Gray, Fleetwood and Robbie Willmott.

Gray said: “That’s what I came here for, the play-offs and the chance to play at Wembley.

“Throughout our team, we had a solid base from back to front and I thought we absolutely destroyed them.

“They didn’t know how to deal with it as we’ve got so much quality throughout the team, even on the bench.”

“I had heard from a few of boys they did overrun is (earlier in the season), but I think we showed how good we are and how much of a passing team we are, with the chances we created.

“I think as soon as Robbie (Willmott) got at the right back, then we said, just get at them, don’t stop, just keep running them. They didn’t have a clue what to do.”

Gray’s goal was another clinical finish, as he slammed home his sixth goal in 10 starts from close range after marvellous work by Stuart Fleetwood.

He continued: “It was on a plate for me, the whole team has been brilliant in providing me with the goals, so all credit to them.

“Fleets was outstanding and he’s been like that since the gaffer came in. He’s a breath of fresh air throughout the team and was brilliant.

“Because me and Stuart have played together a few times, I know how he plays so, I know that when he looks up, I know where I’ve got to be.

“When he pulled it back it was just a case of not over hitting it.”

The former Hinckley man was also full of praise for another person who has made an instant impact since arriving at the club, namely, boss Paul Buckle, especially as Town get another clean sheet, their sixth consecutive shut out .

He continued: “He’s been outstanding. The gaffer got us together and got us fighting for each other.

“The dressing room is absolutely buzzing since he came in, since the first game against Hayes. We’re all so confident now throughout the team, we seem unbeatable.

“The first thing he addressed when he came in was defending set plays and defending them as a team rather than individuals and it has come on leaps and bounds.”

The only slight disappointment from the evening was that Hatters could have been out of sight, but for some missed chances, especially in the second half.

Gray wasn’t fussed though and confirmed he would have definitely taken the scoreline before the first whistle was blown, adding: “We could have been five or six-nil up if everything went our way, but it didn’t.

“Like any game, you’re never going to score every chance you get, but as long as we didn’t concede we can go into the next game full of confidence.

“I would have bitten your hand off if you’d have said we’d be going there two-nil up on Monday.”
