Henry had wanted to stay at Luton

Departing Town skipper Ronnie Henry admitted it was with a heavy heart that he had to leave Kenilworth Road after rejecting a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to the News/Gazette, the club captain revealed he had wanted to stay at the club, but couldn’t sign a deal that was less than he was already on.

Henry said: “We couldn’t agree on a new deal which is a shame because I’d have loved to stay at Luton.

“But the manager works on budgets, quite low budgets to be honest with you and quite rightly so.

“It wasn’t over loads of money which probably people think it was because I wanted to stay at the football club, it was over minimal really.

“I was just asking for the same contract as I was on, and they couldn’t agree on that.”

Henry’s first year didn’t go to plan with the club finishing outside of the play-off places, but that was rectified in some style this term, with Town romping to the title by a massive 19 points.

The former Stevenage full back had no qualms with the road in which manager John Still was going down either too as he reshapes his squad for League Two.
