Henry blast for Town’s under-performing players

Town skipper Ronnie Henry was unerring in his criticism of Luton’s players after they drew 1-1 at Macclesfield on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Silkmen were reduced to 10 men after 21 minutes when goalkeeper Rhys Taylor was sent off, as midfielder Peter Winn donned the gloves.

But Hatters, who had seen manager Paul Buckle leave just hours before kick-off, never really tested the replacement and ended up falling 11 points adrift of the play-offs.

A clearly emotional Henry said: “I just don’t think the players that we’ve got at the moment are good enough or strong enough because I know what it takes to get out of this league and it’s definitely not what we’ve got in there.

“We’ve let ourselves down as they’re down to 10 men and an outfield player in goal, but we just can’t score. We’re just not good enough, that’s the bottom line.

“It can only be that the players in there are not good enough and it needs to be a major turnaround in the players’ attitude. I can’t handle losing, it’s upsetting me a lot at the minute what’s going on.”

A number of names have already been linked with the manager’s role, with Steve Robinson leading the way on the www.lutontoday.co.uk online poll, although Graham Westley is the bookies’ favourites.

On potentially being reunited with his old Stevenage boss, Henry said: “What I can say about Graham Westley is he’ll come in and he’ll have it his way and no-one else’s way.

“So it’s up to the board if they want to appoint him.

“I know Graham Westley very well and I know he won’t stand for anything other than what he wants here.

“Whoever comes in next has got to be strong as it’s a big club.

“We shouldn’t be in this league but we’re not doing it on the pitch so we’re going to be here for longer.”

Whoever gets the nod to be Town’s next manager needs the full backing from fans as Henry added: “I suppose a lot of people have got what they wanted, Paul leaving, which I certainly didn’t and I know a lot of players didn’t.

“It was obvious he wasn’t getting the backing of the supporters, they didnt agree with what he was doing.

“It does help if you have the full backing of supporters and everyone else around.

“It’s not easy to get out of this league. I’ve been lucky enough to get out of it and it took a lot of hard work, sticking with the same team until it worked.

“It’s not easy, you need a two-year period to get out.

“There’s no good changing managers here, there and everywhere, we’ve got to adapt to that and wait to see who comes in now.”
