Hatters urged to open up gap at the top

With nearest rivals Cambridge United in FA Trophy action, Luton could move nine points clear of the U’s, and 10 points ahead of Alfreton Town, should the Reds suffer defeat at home to relegation threatened Aldershot Town.

Hatters host mid-table Hereford as Harris said: “That’s one of the things that we’ll be saying, we have to take that opportunity.

“Cambridge are not playing, so we’ve got a great opportunity to open that gap up.

“It’s not as easy as that, because Hereford might have something to say about that as well.

“But the opportunity is there and it would be nice if we can do that.”

Although Hereford have struggled badly this season and are exactly 11 points adrift of the play-off places as well as the drop zone, Harris as always is anticipating a tough encounter, especially as the two sides played out a stalemate at Edgar Street earlier in the season.

He said: “We ground out a 0-0 and sometimes you have to go to these places and do that.

“I saw them play a couple of Monday’s ago when they were at Woking and they got beat 3-0.

“You know any side that Martin Foyle will bring down will be organised, will work hard and as John (Still) has said and we’ve all said, there are no easy games and Saturday will be no different.”

Hatters will go into the game in fine heart after extending their unbeaten league run to 21 games with a 2-1 win at Macclesfield on Tuesday night.

Harris continued: “It was very tough and you’d like to think that going away to Macclesfield puts us in good heart for the remaining number of games.

“I personally thought they were the best side we’ve played all year and I thought they were good at our place, I must add that, and we told John Askey (Silkmen boss) that after the game as well.

“So to come away with three points on a horrible night, which is what it was, is fantastic and hopefully that will set us up for the remaining games we’ve got to overcome.”

The victory has increased expectations even more amongst fans that this year will be the year Hatters finally do win promotion from the Conference, but Harris wasn’t getting too carried away.

He added: “We do understand that, but we keep saying to the players, one game a time, one game at a time.

“Those performances you’ll look back on it and go, do you remember the time we went to Macclesfield on a Tuesday night and we were up against it.

“We battled hard, we got blocks in, they had quite a few crosses into the box and had quite a few attempts on goal.

“I thought we got quite a few blocks on the edge of the box as well, so you can look back and if everything goes well, that was a game that put us on the road.”
