Hatters to consider appealing Thomas’ red card

Hatters will study video evidence before deciding if they are to appeal Wayne Thomas’ red card against Braintree last night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The recent signing was sent off after 34 minutes for allegedly elbowing Sean Marks as the players jostled for position at a throw-in.

Thomas expressed his innocence immediately after the game and assistant boss Alan Neilson said: “I spoke Wayne afterwards and he said he’s gone forward, gone backwards and when he flicked his head back, the back of his head has hit the Marks in the face and cut his lip.

“He said it’s definitely not a red card. We’re going to look at the DVD when we get it and go from there.

“He said he’d like to appeal it straight away, but we’ll look at DVD and see how bad it really is.

“I asked the ref at the end of the game. He said it was an elbow. If that’s right, he’ll get a three match ban, if it’s wrong and it’s the back of his head, I’m sure we’ll appeal against it.”

The referee had already shown one red card as he dismissed Matt Paine on 21 minutes for a tackle on Arnaud Mendy, a decision that Neilson also disagreed with.

He continued: “From my point of view it looked a high challenge, I think everyone thought it might be a yellow card but he showed a red card.”

That view was echoed by Stuart Fleetwood as he added: “I don’t think either were sendings off. I didn’t think there’s was and I didn’t think ours was, so that evened it up, but we just weren’t at it again.”
