The 20-year-old had been on loan at Skrill South side Maidenhead United until Luton swooped to sign him until January 4.

Mawson could make his debut at Alfreton tomorrow with Alex Lacey out injured as Bees academy director Ose Aibangee told the club’s official website: “Alfie’s time at Maidenhead has been good for his development.

“He has got used to playing competitive men’s football week in week out and got used to the rough and tumble of non-league football.

“Maidenhead are a good club and play a similar style of football to the one we do in our Academy so it was a good fit for Alfie.

“However, we had the opportunity to get him games at a higher level and it was one that will be good for Alfie.

“He will go to a good club pushing for promotion back to the Football League and will be playing games where there is a lot at stake.

“Alfie has had a taste of being in a professional first team environment at Brentford and he will get more of that at Luton.

“It is the next stage of his development and we will watch closely how he goes over the next few weeks.”

On his new arrival, Town boss John Still said: “Alfie took my eye in the development games we had against Brentford and he’s one where you think to yourself ‘he’s got something’.

“He’s what I would class as a typical centre half.”
