Hatters submit Kovacs appeal

HATTERS have confirmed they have appealed to the FA over defender Janos Kovacs’ red card at Darlington on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Hungarian was dismissed by referee Richard Wigglesworth on 82 minutes for denying Ryan Bowman a goalscoring opportunity, despite Ed Asafu-Adjaye clearly covering.

Town will find out if they have been successful today (Thursday), but if not, Kovacs will miss the FA Trophy semi-final second leg clash with York City at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

Speaking after the game, Brabin said: “That’s one of the decisions that baffled me.

“Ed was clearly behind him and he’s sent him off.

“We’re going to have to look at it again as from where we were, it didn’t look like a sending off.”

Goalkeeper Mark Tyler was of the same opinion as his manager too, as he said: “It’s not a sending off. You can totally see that Ed’s behind him.

“We’ll watch the DVD and hopefully we can appeal it. Janos has been outstanding with Pilks (George Pilkington) and it will be a great loss if we do lose him.”

Recalled midfielder Godfrey Poku also didn’t think that Kovacs, who has been outstanding on his return to Luton this season, didn’t deserve the punishment. He said: “It was never a red card, Ed was about five or six yards behind him.

“But that’s football, we just have to get on with it.”

The decision to dismiss Kovacs wasn’t the only one that Brabin queried on the night either, as Town conceded two penalties, while Asafu-Adjaye could easily have given away another moments before Stuart Fleetwood equalised.

Brabin added: “That’s another one that could have been given.

“Just because he hasn’t given that one he’s tried to level it up a bit. I thought the first one was.

“Godfrey’s got to be a little brighter.

“He’s in the box, we’ve got bodies behind the ball, so there’s no need for that.

“From where I was, it looked like he had pulled him back, so I can understand that decision.

“The second one, it’s another decision that baffled us all.

“It was packed with incident, and I’m glad we haven’t been beaten, but overall it wasn’t a fantastic night.”
